Plant Oil Extraction
Porous Metal Filters Plant Oil Extraction Applications
Depending on the type of oil and final purpose, the oil is processed in a sequence of process steps which can be divided as follows:
- Crude oil filtration for removal of feet.
- Miscella filtration for production of lecithin from gums.
- Bleached and/or detoxified oil filtration to remove color and other components.
- Winterised oil filtration to remove waxes to enhance cold stability.
- Catalyst filtration to remove nickel catalyst after hydrogenation of the oil.
- Residual catalyst filtration to remove solid nickel catalyst after transitioning to nickel soaps.
- Deodorised oil filtration to remove impurities formed during deodorization.
- Safety filtration to improve filtrate quality and/or to protect sequential equipment.
- Polishing filtration to improve product quality
Botanical extraction is the process of removing soluble components from a solid plant material. Itโs similar to the process of brewing coffee or tea at home. A variety of fields utilize this process, including laboratory sciences, where botanical plant oil extraction creates products we use every day. CBD products and essential oils are two examples of common items that result from botanical plant oil extractions.
Because botanical extraction often involves solid plant materials meeting a solvent, some of the plant materials can make their way into the extract itself, rendering the product impure. Filtering removes plant particulates and clarifies the extract to create a pure final product. Using the tea and coffee example again, you wouldnโt just dump a spoonful of tea leaves or coffee grounds into a cup of water and drink it. Picture botanical extraction filtering as using a tea infuser or placing a coffee filter into your coffee machine. The filtering process creates a pure, high-quality product, whether itโs CBD, essential oils, or another extraction.
