Annealing Heat Treatment

Annealing Heat Treatment Services

Annealing heat treatment is a special heat treat processing for wire cloth that produces a product that can be more easily fabricated and shaped, and increases the quality of the end product. Porous Metal Filters provides annealed and soft sintered (coil sintered) woven wire cloth for applications that require special shapes or processing.

Annealing heat treatment changes the properties of the wire cloth, allowing it to be stretched without tearing and stabilizing it after cold working. The mesh has a memory after weaving. Annealing heat treatment provides for easier fabrication and shaping when deep drawing or pleating wire cloth materials. Porous Metal Filters has years of experience in offering heat treating annealing heat treatment services.

Heat treating involves running material through a specialized tempering temperature in order to get that hardness and tensile strength to a certain range or point. This differs from the annealing process because the annealing temperature is chosen with softening the material in mind, not hardening it.

Coil Sintered Wire Cloth Also Known as Soft Sinter Wire Cloth

Soft sintering, or coil sintering, aids in bonding the individual wires. This helps to eliminating loose wires during stamping or forming process. The bonds at wire intersections are very light surface bonds, producing a soft material that can be easily formed and shaped. While the bonds can break under pressure, they are normally strong enough to hold during forming. Please note this process is not true diffusion bonding of the material. If you require 100% bonding on the material, PMF provides this in flat sheets (24” x 48”) utilizing a proprietary diffusion bonding process.

Soft Sintered / Coil Sintered Wire Cloth Applications

  • Small, precise shapes that must be bent, such as mesh for microphones in small electronic products.
  • Stamped parts without loose wire edges, or that will be bent during processing without losing the shape of the mesh.
  • This process is commonly used as a manufacturing aid, not to create a true monolithic structure. Due to the wide range of mesh specifications this process is only applicable in certain conditions. Please consult our staff for more details on this process for your application.

Benefits of Annealed Wire Cloth

Annealed Wire Cloth can be:

  • Deep drawn without tearing the cloth.
  • Precision-shaped into custom shapes such as small-height pleats
  • Fabricated into a new shape, with no loss of the shape over time, as the material loses memory of the pre-annealed shape.

PMF can anneal mesh in coils, full rolls and in panels.
